Carbon Removal Technologies

Demonstrate innovation in your climate program by funding rigorously selected emerging carbon removal technologies

While reducing emissions remains fundamental in the fight against climate change, it's not the whole story. By 2050, we need to remove 10 billion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere every year to reach the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. Supporting innovative solutions for removing CO₂ is essential.

It is critical that significant investment in carbon removal with a low risk of reversal begins now to reach the thousand-fold increase needed by 2050. A diverse portfolio of carbon removal and storage technologies should be supported to maximize the chances of scaling removals whilst minimizing the risks to biodiversity and food production from over-reliance on any one given approach at scale.
The Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting (2024)

Promising cutting-edge durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions are emerging. But while 95% of CDR deals take the form of offtakes, where the buyer pays on delivery, what innovative CDR projects need is early-stage cash. These technologies require buyers’ support now, presenting an opportunity to catalyze technological development in line with the Oxford Principles and to meet Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM) goals.

We need to bridge the gap between large offtakes from a small handful of companies on the one hand, and, on the other, the large number of carbon removal technologies needing cash today to bring their solutions down the cost curve.

What are Carbon Removals?

Curbing climate change requires not only reducing future emissions of carbon dioxide (CO₂) but also actively removing existing CO₂ from the atmosphere. This process, called carbon dioxide removal (CDR), uses different solutions to store CO₂ in the biosphere (the organisms on Earth) or geosphere (solid lands in Earth's crust and core) for the long term. Scaled approaches like tree planting and natural area conservation are important contributions to CDR. However, to remove the significant amounts of CO₂ already in the atmosphere and durably storing them in the geosphere, additional solutions are needed.

CDR innovation offers a promising avenue for accelerated and scalable CO₂ removal compared to relying solely on carbon removal to the biosphere. These solutions, while crucial to deploy alongside, and not instead of, emissions reductions for achieving global net-zero emissions, are still in their early stages of development. Rapid development and scaling will be essential to meet our climate goals.

How our Carbon Removal Technologies Program works

Our corporate partners support our carbon removal technology program as part of their Beyond Value Chain Mitigation Strategy (BVCM). Through a combination of pre-purchase and off-take agreements, we facilitate carbon removal purchases and unlock capital for selected projects on behalf of our clients. We provide reporting on projects and distribute offset credits if and when they are delivered.
