VCMI Carbon Integrity

VCMI’s Carbon Integrity claim provides guidance for companies to make credible claims about their voluntary use of carbon credits.

The Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative’s (VCMI) Carbon Integrity claim provides guidance for companies to make credible claims about their voluntary use of carbon credits. Following a public consultation, the Claims Code of Practice was published in June 2023, with further guidance published later that year. There are three Carbon Integrity claims, each associated with the purchase of carbon credits equal to different percentages of a company’s remaining emissions, once it has demonstrated progress towards its near-term internal emission reduction targets.

Main claim you can make:

This organization is taking action now to accelerate global net zero, by going above and beyond science-aligned emissions cuts through the additional use of high-quality carbon credits.

Examples:

An Early Adopter Program was run between October and December 2023 with five companies that included Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Better Drinks. Companies can also register their interest to be a part of VCMI’s 2024 program.

The Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative (VCMI) was established in 2021 as an international non-profit, co-funded by the UK Government and the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and led by Meridian Institute, a US-based not-for-profit organization. It works with civil society, the private sector, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and governments in support of high-integrity carbon markets. You can find out more about VCMI here.
