Vichada Savannah Reforestation, Colombia

Type: Nature-based Solutions | Afforestation and Reforestation
Region: South America
Standard: Gold Standard

This project is located in the Orinoco Department in Colombia and the main activity is reforestation. The objective of the project is the creation of close to nature forests with the main goal of producing high quality hardwoods combined with carbon sequestration, while stabilizing and restoring fragile and degraded areas in an economically, socially, and ecologically viable way. Overall, the climate project objectives are the establishment of profitable production- and conservation systems, enabling the enterprise to work in a beneficial way, with the complement of sustainable investment opportunities.

Colombia has experienced substantial deforestation, losing ~4.6 million hectares of tree cover between 2001 and 2020, according to the World Rainforest. Key drivers include cattle ranching, illegal crop cultivation (coca), illegal logging, gold mining, agricultural expansion, and infrastructure development.

Located in Vichada near the Orinoco River, this project aims to restore degraded savannah grasslands by planting timber trees such as acacia, pine, and eucalyptus, while conserving surrounding ecosystems and biodiversity. It supports native wildlife habitats, improves soil quality, conserves water, and contributes to climate change mitigation.

In addition to carbon sequestration, the project provides social benefits such as creating local job opportunities to reduce rural-to-urban migration, promoting equal rights with a diverse team, and offering training on sustainable practices and climate change mitigation. It also provides habitats for both migratory and native species.

In addition to delivering emission removals over the project’s lifetime to take climate action (SDG 13), the project delivers additional benefits:

  • Responsible consumption and production: Commercial forestry on degraded lands supports sustainable resource management and production practices. By rehabilitating unproductive areas, it promotes efficient use of natural resources, which focuses on sustainable management. Additionally, implementing sustainable forest management practices fosters responsible production patterns, balancing economic, environmental, and social needs while contributing to the overall goals of responsible consumption and production
  • Life on Land: Increases forest area, decreases degraded land area, and increases progress towards sustainable forest management.

Our goal is to deliver 1 billion tonnes of emissions reductions and removals
