Current climate policies will result in global warming of more than 3°C by the end of the century. Governments must take greater action on emissions now. COP29 cannot end in half-baked policies, it must bring leaders together to find clear pathways forward to achieve the best outcomes for people and the planet.
It is time to lean into government-to-government action and finalizing Article 6 remains critical to this – governments must double down on efforts to ensure this can be fully operationalized.
Our expert Article 6 team is asking for COP29 to achieve the following outcomes:
- Finalize the Article 6 Rulebook: Complete the operationalization of Article 6 to establish clear guidelines for international carbon markets, ensuring environmental integrity and social safeguards.
- Empower government action: Encourage more countries to use Article 6 to meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), aligning with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement.
- Foster International Cooperation: Use Article 6 to deepen collaboration between countries to address climate challenges, while facilitating access to finance and technology to deliver the low-carbon transition in developing countries.
- Strengthen Climate Finance: COP29 has been dubbed the “finance COP”, Article 6 is critical to unlock private capital to support climate mitigation.
