Episode 10: Accelerate Seagrass with Leanne Cullen-Unsworth, Dr. Claire Evans, Molly Kampmann, and Kirsty Schneeberger.

Published 29 January 2025

In this episode, we're going under the sea with our Head of Product Innovation, Kirsty Schneeberger, and our three expert guests, to explore seagrass meadows and why they need urgent protection and restoration. Join us as we delve into a groundbreaking program, developed by Climate Impact Partners, Deloitte, Project Seagrass, and the UK’s National Oceanography Centre, aimed at funding UK seagrass restoration and unlocking long-term finance for this vital ecosystem.

Known as the powerhouse of coastal seas, seagrass meadows play a crucial role in sequestering carbon, protecting coastlines, and supporting marine biodiversity. But restoration has been underfunded, with nearly a third of seagrass lost globally in the last century. So tune into this episode to learn about the wonders of seagrass and how this collaboration is moving climate ambition to impact, unlocking a powerful tool in the fight against the climate crisis.

Listen to this fascinating episode to learn about:

  • The critical state of seagrass restoration - why its disappearing at an alarming rate, and what are the consequences
  • The power of seagrass – how it captures carbon, safeguards coastlines, and sustains marine biodiversity
  • A collaboration for climate innovation – how Deloitte, Project Seagrass, the National Oceanography Centre and Climate Impact Partners are working together to tackle this issue head on with the Accelerate Seagrass program, as part of Deloitte’s wider BVCM strategy
  • Accelerate Seagrass - how the program will look to address the barriers that prevent finance flowing to seagrass restoration, including improving the scientific knowledge of carbon sequestration, piloting new techniques for seagrass propagation and engaging communities in meadow restoration
